Sidney Lanier rallied from a touchdown deficit at halftime to defeat Charles Henderson 20-14 at Cramton Bowl on Thursday night.
With a third region win, the Poets (3-4, 3-1 Class 5A, Region 2) have likely clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2008.
“The boys came to fight. We built the program from the ground up,” Lanier coach C.J. Harris said. “We’ve been doing things the right way, and good things are starting to follow.”
Charles Henderson (2-4, 1-2) led 7-0 at halftime and 14-6 after three quarters. Lanier quarterback James Foster threw three touchdown passes, two to Decoreyon Johnson and one to Quintavieus Hutchinson.
Safety Ky’shaun McDaniel and cornerback Glenn Adams each had an interception for the Poets.
“I told the kids, ‘It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish,'” Harris said. “We started kind of sluggish, and the defense kept us in the game in the first half by only giving up seven points. Offensively we got it going in the second half after a big 3-and-out by the defense. It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.”
Lanier travels to Greenville next Friday.
