Haywood County Post 47 may be on the verge of another sweep in the American Legion playoffs.
Post 47 dramatically rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night to edge Hickory, 8-7, at Lake Junaluska Elementary School.
Bret Baldwin and Travis Holden had a team-high three hits apiece. Holden also cracked a home run for Haywood County (22-5) which now leads the best-of-five series, two games to one.
Game 3 is Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton.
This is the third round of the American Legion playoffs and one more win would guarantee Post 47 a berth in the state tournament scheduled for July 24-28 in Salisbury.
Haywood County has never been this far in the Legion playoffs.
Baldwin, a Smoky Mountain graduate who recently signed with Louisburg, led the way Wednesday with three RBIs. Holden and Bryce Burgess added two each and Mason Fox managed one.
The winning pitcher was Jake Sutton. He threw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief after taking over for starter Ethan Meece.
