Laveen Cesar Chavez’s defense spent so much time in Phoenix North’s backfield Friday night, no one was exactly sure how many sacks Chavez logged in its 50-7 win.

At least in the low double digits, one coach said. Chavez gave up a touchdown on the first drive of the game, then scored the next 50 points, including two defensive touchdowns.

Nose guard Ja’Quan Graves had at least three of those sacks, Pavone Meyers ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns and Dominic Yanez added 85 yards and two scores as Chavez stayed undefeated in Section IV of Division III.

Chavez (4-0 in section. 4-1 overall) scored 44 of its points in the second half after trailing 7-6 at halftime.

“The D-line just dominated the offensive line. We drove them downfield and we would just stay in our gap and wait for the ball,” Graves said. “We’re a second-half team.”

Both teams struggled to score in the first half, Chavez missing opportunities on a fumble, turnover on downs and interception in the end zone in the first half. North couldn’t take advantage of those mistakes.

North got on the board first, hitting on a 4th-and-16 pass from Torey Blevins to Angelo Myler that went for 33 yards and a touchdown early in the first quarter.

North had a golden opportunity to add to the lead when a punt hit a Chavez player in the back for a fumble, but Blevins was sacked by defensive end Kavarry Burns on fourth down in the red zone.

Chavez needed only three plays to score its first touchdown, a 36-yard run by Devyn Crockett, a 29-yard run for Meyers and Yanez taking an end-around 21 yards for the score. That made the score 7-6 for North with 11 minutes to go in the second quarter.

Chavez saw its next drive end on downs, and its final drive of the first half ended in an interception in the end zone by Jason Cortez of North.

The second half was all Chavez. A North fumble led to a score, than a turnover on downs led to Yanez’s second TD. Donte Lindsey returned an interception for a touchdown and the Chavez ground game assumed control on offense.

Meyers scored twice more and was in on a fourth-and-goal stop on defense, and Elijah Crockett returned a fumble for a score.

North (3-1, 3-2) got 215 passing yards from Blevins .

“We’re very strong up front,” Chavez coach Jim Rattay said. “Our kids really got after it. We knew that defensively we were going to have to play well. We got physical and said ‘Let’s go ‘em,’ and we did.”
