Corning’s Jessica Lawson finished second in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Saturday. Lawson, a junior, finished with a time of 17 minutes, 41.5 seconds, two seconds behind first-place finisher Madeleine Davison, from Wexford, Pa.
Lawson advances to the Foot Locker National Finals in San Diego, Calif., on Dec. 12. She won the New York State championships, along with the STAC Championships this season.
Due to her outstanding individual performance in the Nike Championship last season, she chose to run in the Foot Locker race this year.
“She was with the leaders in the first 1,000 meters,” Corning assistant coach Drew Cartwright said. “With 600 meters to go she was in sixth place until she pulled away to finish second. She was happy to have a good race, and was very pleased with her time.”
Lawson cut her previous time in the Bronx, which she also ran in as a freshman, by 30 seconds.
Elmira’s Abbey Wheeler finsihed third in the Nike Cross Regional Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
Wheeler finished with a time of 18:05.3. The senior finished second to Lawson in the girls’ state Federation Championships.
Wheeler qualifies for the Nike girls national race in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday.
Maine-Endwell’s Dan Schaffer finished 4th in the boys race in the Nike Cross Regional Championship. Schaffer finished with a time of 16:02.4, only 30 seconds behind first-place finisher Ben Petrella, from Liverpool.
Schaffer, a senior, finished 6th in the NYS Federation Championships on the same 5K course with a time of 16:03.8. The finish also qualifies him for the Nike Cross National Championship meet at the Portland Medows Golf Course in Portland.
“Don’t worry about your time, just race,” coach Mike Cordi said to Schaffer, who captured his fourth place finish after being in 7th with half a mile remaining.
Schaffer will be attending Binghamton University next fall.
Maine-Endwell finished eighth as a team. “Being able to compete with Corning and Elmira is an honor,” Cordi said.
The Spartans’ average time was 17:01. Corning finished 10th, while Elmira finished in 22nd.
