After each team won two games in the 1st Arkansas Bail Bonds Tournament, both the Lady Bombers and Bombers dropped their conference openers at Jonesboro.
The road does not get any easier as both teams travel to North Little Rock today to compete against the Class 7A Charging Wildcats. The Lady Wildcats are ranked 18th in the nation, and the Wildcats are one of the top teams in the state. We will be home Friday, hosting Little Rock Central. Both junior varsity teams will play at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 6 and varsity boys around 7:30.
We host Branson today in seventh-grade and junior high action, but the games will be played at the high school. Seventh-grade girls start the action at 4 p.m.
We have a very busy schedule Thursday. We do not like to double book events, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. At the junior high, the seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade girls will play Highland at 4 p.m. At the high school, we will host a wrestling match in the main gym against Conway and Cabot at 6 p.m. In the high school auxiliary gym, our senior high JV teams will face Valley Springs, starting with the girls at 4 p.m. Our seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade boys’ teams will be on the road to Highland at 5 p.m.
The Bomber wrestling team is doing very well. At Russellville, we beat North Little Rock and Benton in a dual match. Saturday, Lane Alexander pinned last year’s 106-pound state champion to finish third in a huge meet involving schools from northwest Arkansas and Oklahoma.
We travel to Jonesboro today, host Conway and Cabot on Thursday, and travel to Berryville on Saturday. Wrestling coaches Damon Eikenhorst and Travis Alexander have done a great job with our kids and filling in the weight categories.
Mackenzie Mohler and Michael Leppold have been leading their respective swim teams in scoring. Swim will travel to Paragould today and Clarksville on Saturday.
The annual Elks Hoop Shoot will be held Saturday at The Hangar. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and is open to the public at no charge. Not only will our young Bombers be competing in several age divisions, but so will winners from area schools as well. Last year, Hannah Pfeifer was the national runner-up in her age division. Perhaps we will have another national competitor this year.
Also starting Saturday will be our annual Junior High Invitational Tournament, held at the junior high. Both our junior high teams received first-round byes and will play Jan. 21. The finals are set for Jan. 24.
On a personal note, I am sad to say we lost a very dear gentleman and true Bomber over the holidays. Rest in peace, Jay Baker.
The Bomber Booster Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. today at Holy Smokes. Everyone is welcome to attend.
