Former Eaglecrest Raptor football player recovering to get back to the game.
KUSA – He’s got it .He’s got the speed, the agility and the hops. Just by looking at him, anyone can tell he’s an athlete. Xavier Lewis graduated from Eaglecrest High School with a 4.6 GPA, he’s a division one athlete, but one day all of those accolades didn’t matter.
“The things that I thought were hard before, it’s not hard anymore because I’ve [overcome] so much,” Xavier Lewis explained.
Just a couple of months ago on December 10th, Xavier suffered a stroke at the University of Wyoming.
“I didn’t drink enough water.I didn’t think I needed it,” said Lewis.
Dehydration was the culprit.
Two months later, he hasn’t lost a step. “Physically I’m good,” said Lewis.
He does suffer from Aphasia which is an impairment of language that affects speech and the ability to read or write.
“My speech is coming along. I couldn’t talk a month ago,” Lewis said.
Xavier is used to routine, and every day he’ll go to speech therapy and then work out for several hours so he can get back onto the field and inside the classroom.
“It’s a job now. Football was a job, being a student was a job and right now, therapy is my job,” Lewis explains. “It’s been frustrating. I’m getting there.”
As Xavier continues to work on his speech, he’s determined to be stronger and faster than ever.
“I see him returning better than he was before,” explained Dominic Magazu, his Elite Speed trainer. “He was a freak before and now he’s putting all of this extra work into it, he’s gonna be fun to watch,” Magazu said.
“I’m so lucky and blessed for a second chance,” Lewis said. “I’m going to be back soon though. I’m going to be there.”
Xavier expects to be back on the football field with the Wyoming Cowboys in time for Fall Camp.
