Rangers hire new head coach to replace Tom McCabe and former boys golf head coach
KUSA — Lewis-Palmer acquires two new Rangers with new head coaches hires, Brett Lester (Baseball) and Gregg Jones (Boys Golf).
Brett Lester accepted a coaching position with the Rangers and also accepted a Physical Education teaching position at Lewis-Palmer. “As a teacher and coach, Brett is eager to bring excitement to students in the classroom and on the athletic field,” said Athletic Director Nick Baker. “He is also dedicated to enthusiastic and dynamic teaching as a means of creating a lifelong love of knowledge within students.”
“Being a new hire at Lewis-Palmer has been a great experience this far,” said Lester. “The staff is welcoming and helpful; You definitely feel the strong community here at D38.”
Lester has two years of high school teaching experience in history, physical education and science, as well as five years as an adjunct Professor of Kinesiology at Dallas Baptist University.
The new coach was previous a head coach for Rotan High School in Texas in 2014, leading them to a district title with an 11-5 overall record after a prior season record of 2-15. He was also a Pine Creek pitching coach in 2012 and 2013; both back-to-back 5A state qualifying teams.
“Personally, I will challenge our kids to push themselves and hold themselves to high expectations,” said Lester. “When they leave our program I want our boys to be proud of what they accomplished and leave a legacy to the next wave, while they go on to be strong men and leaders within our society.”
The Rangers 2014-15 team were 4A baseball runner-ups to Green Mountain. Head Coach Tom McCabe helped lead the Rangers to a 22-4 overall record before being let go this summer for unknown reasons. The Rangers only have four returning players from last years team, Paul Tillotson, Billy Cook, Cody Morrow, and Nick Chorney.
“Lewis-Palmer has a strong winning tradition in many sports, especially baseball having been in the state finals last year,” said Lester. “We did graduate a lot of seniors, but we have high expectations for our boys. We will get together as a coaching staff and lay out goals for our program in the upcoming weeks.”
Baker also announced that Gregg Jones has accepted a head coaching job for the boys golf team. Jones holds over 30 years of golf experience at various levels, including the head golf professional that started up the Pine Creek Golf Course according to Baker. Most of his experience is with the Colorado Springs Country Club dispersed with playing professionally.
Jones is currently an instructor at World of Gold Sand Creek.
He bring with him, assistant coach Larry Mullis. “His experience with golf nearly mirrors Gregg’s,” said Baker. “Together the two have over 60 years of playing, teaching, and managing the sport of golf.”
The Rangers boys golf team finished 10th in the 2014-15 4A state tournament. The boys will be in good hands under the veteran coaching ability of Jones and Mullis.
Lewis-Palmer has also hired a new athletic trainer, Scott Riley, previously from Rampart High School. According to Baker, “Our long time athletic trainer Kevin Margarucci accepted a job with USA Hockey.”
