(WLTX) —- Christian Kinsley booted an 18-yard field goal with three seconds left in regulation to give Lexington a 38-35 win at defending state champion Spartanburg in the Class 4A Division II semi-finals.
The win sends the Wildcats to their first state championship appearance since losing to Dorman in 2000. The Wildcats have not won a state championship in football since 1950.
Lexington’s defense allowed 35 points to the Vikings as Mr. Football Tavien Feaster scored two touchdowns but had just 12 carries for 60 yards. He did most of damage in the air as he had 11 catches for 130 yards.
But the Lexington defense forced five turnovers including three interceptions of Spartanburg quarterback Austin Scott, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina.
Wildcat running back Slade Carroll opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown and finished with 34 carries for 149 yards.
Lexington will face Northwestern next Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium for the Class AAAA Division II state title.
