It’s a big week in the CAAC Blue girls basketball race.
Tara Lierman and Holt are right in the mix.
In a season where the Rams have been hampered by injuries — Kamrin Reed suffered a leg injury in the opener and Lauren Seagren sprained a wrist earlier this month — they are just a game behind Blue co-leaders East Lansing and Grand Ledge entering this week.
And if Holt (5-4, 4-1) gets a road victory over Jackson on Tuesday, it could be facing rival Grand Ledge on Friday with first place on the line. Grand Ledge would have to beat East Lansing on Tuesday in another key Blue contest to set up that first-place battle.
“That was a goal for us right from the start of the season,” Lierman said of challenging for the Blue title. ‘We knew we had a chance and we still do have a chance. We talk about it every day and talk about how each game is just as important as the other one, and we know that we’re capable of winning it. We haven’t done it in a long, long time.”
Veteran Holt coach Doug Harkema said his team has been resilient and also believes it’s starting to get back to playing good basketball. And having an experienced player like Lierman has aided that.
Lierman, a senior guard, has elevated her play to keep Holt in the hunt despite the injuries to a pair of starters. The fourth-year varsity player averaged 28 points and had a quadruple-double while helping the Rams pick up wins over Sexton and Okemos last week. Lierman is leading the area in scoring and also closing in on a few milestones for Holt.
“She’s all in all the time and that’s what I love about her,” Harkema said.
“She’s not the fastest or the quickest or the best shooter or whatever, but she just really understands the game and I would say is a winner. Her brothers and sisters have a left a legacy in front of her at Holt and she’s definitely living up to that too.”
