Asheville High alum Crezdon Butler is back in the NFL after recently agreeing to a futures contract with the Detroit Lions.
Detroit is the sixth team in the pro football career of Butler, who was the 2005 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year after leading the Cougars to a 15-0 record and NCHSAA 3-A championship as a high school senior.
Butler has previously played pro for Arizona, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Tampa Bay and Washington.
He was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Steelers and has 22 career tackles with three forced fumbles.
The Buccaneers cut Butler on Dec. 16, two days after they lost to the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, 19-17.
The futures contract does not necessarily guarantee Butler a roster spot with the Lions, but does mean that Detroit owns his rights and will invite him to training camp.
