Legendary Lipscomb Academy coach Ernie Smith, who has headed the school’s baseball and girls basketball programs for nearly four decades, is set to begin his final season as a girls basketball coach.
Smith, a 2015 Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Hall of Fame inductee, has compiled close to 900 wins as girls basketball coach, leading the Lady Mustangs to 30 district and region titles, along with 1986 Class AA state championship.
“Athletics is one of the best teaching opportunities we have,” Smith said in a statement. “All of the players and their parents that I have had the privilege of working with over the years will forever be a part of me. They are the source of the fulfillment of this job.”
Smith, who notched baseball win No. 900 in last year’s Region 5-AA tournament, will continue to coach baseball at Lipscomb. In 38 seasons, Smith has led the Mustangs to seven state championships, 29 district titles, 19 region titles and 16 state tournament appearances.
Added Lipscomb Athletic Director Mike Roller, “Without question, Ernie is one of the most impactful coaches in school history and has helped hundreds if not thousands of young men and women grow physically and spiritually. Ernie has positioned our girls basketball program to be successful for many years to come and will continue his run as one of the top baseball coaches in the state.”
Lipscomb will begin the process of hiring a new girls basketball coach immediately.
