Franklin D. Roosevelt High School’s Jeffrey Peters carded a 7-over-par 71 during the first round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys golf tournament Sunday, held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University. Peters is currently tied for 20th out of 99 players and one shot ahead of Spackenkill’s Erik Stauderman.
“It was a windy, cold and rainy day all day long,” said Roosevelt coach Kevin Hart. “But (Peters) has been ‘Mr. Consistency’ and kept the ball in play throughout the day.”
Spackenkill’s Stanley Garrant carded a 15-over par and Millbrook’s Jordan Stein had and 11-over par.
The final round of the tournament is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. Monday.
Eight golfers will compete in the quarterfinals of the the 78th Annual Ralph DeStefano Memorial Tournament’s championship flight at College Hill Golf Course on Saturday, after the second round of the match-play event was held Sunday.
Brian Viola, the defending tournament champion, edged Kris Kozlek 3-and-2, while last year’s runner-up, Mike Fisher, lost a 3-and-2 match to Jim Dunn. Brand Waldorf and Barry Winter each edged their opponents, Kevin Ludwig and Bee Mera, respectively, with 2-and-1 decisions.
Other winners included Ryan Gabel (5-and-4 over Mike Rowan), Nick Dilio (5-and-4 over Matt Mahlke), Adam Seifts (4-and-3 over Rusty Sweed). The result of Brian Casey’s match against Brett Russo was unavailable when the Journal went to press.
In the first flight, Terry McGinnis defeated Glenn Olewnick 3-and-2, Dave Schmidt bested Kevin Ventosa 4-and-3, Jason Riti earned a win by default over Chris Tompkins, Billy Tilton downed Ryan Russo 4-and-3, Farid Khan edged Mark Giordano 1-up, Robert Gibbons defeated Dave Clark 5-and-4, Tommy Myerson topped Drew Comatos 2-up, and Dave Morano beat Mike Horowitz 3-and-2.
