ASHEVILLE – Teammates do just about everything together.
That theme rang true Wednesday with the latest round of Western North Carolina college signings.
The Asheville Youth Rowing Association held an afternoon ceremony for Caleigh Sewell. One week earlier, fellow University of North Carolina recruit Abby Hudspeth was the honoree inside the Jack Gartner Boathouse.
Both girls are seniors who attend Roberson. The Asheville Youth Rowing Association has now produced a college recruit in each of the last five years.
“I’m ecstatic,” Sewell said.
“(Hudspeth) and I push each other and motivate each other every day.”
A premium is placed on height with college rowers. Hudspeth and Sewell are both modestly 5 feet, 5 inches tall.
“That tells you a lot about their ability,” AYRA program director/assistant coach Martha Williams said.
Hudspeth and Sewell were formerly gymnasts and neither girl had rowed competitively until she reached high school.
“We know when to give each other a boost,” Hudspeth said.
There are already two Asheville residents on the UNC rowing roster — Lauren Tarpley and Maggie Lusk are both sophomores.
