2015-16 East Ramapo Titans
Coach — Ryan Kearns

How many years have you been coaching at your current school? This is my 10th year with East Ramapo and ninth as the head coach.

How did you team do last season? 20-10 dual meet record, quarterfinalist in the Section 1 Duals, 10th Place in the Section 1 Tournament.

Who are your top returning wrestlers? Trey Wardlaw (99-pound section champ) and Romello Bradley (fifth place at 138) are our returning All-Section wrestlers.   We have a number of sectional qualifiers returning this year, too. Luis Lema-Lema, Rahsone Simpson, Jhavon Innocent, Joshua Jean-Baptiste, Jahkem Collins-Martinez, Leo Pamphile and Shatir Henry. I’m excited to see who makes a name for themselves this year.

Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? Anthony Romero (fourth at 126), Marcus Stroud (fifth at 170) and Sherman Spence.

What is the strength of your lineup? Our numbers have been up in the past few years so our depth seems to be keeping us competitive.

What will be the biggest challenge for your team? We haven’t had a modified team the past two years, but fortunately it was restored this year. Our freshmen and sophomore classes didn’t get the development that I was hoping for on modified, but the guys that stuck with it through a JV/varsity season are a lot tougher. I’m hoping our numbers will rise again now that we have a middle school team back.

Will you host any tournaments? We are hosting the seventh annual East Ramapo Titans Tournament. It’s a dual meet tournament and we were fortunate enough to have won it last year. I’d like to be able to start a winning streak.

Which team(s) is your top rival? We don’t necessarily have a rival yet. We are still building towards that. My league is extremely competitive, and in my opinion, one of the toughest leagues in the section. Suffern, North Rockland, Clarkstown North and Clarkstown South are some tough teams to deal with every year. However, wrestling against those teams has made us a better program.

What are your team goals for the season? Constant and never-ending improvement. That is always our goal. We want to build on what we accomplished last year and bring a ton of positive press to our district.

On deck: Clarkstown South

I’ll be posting at least one of these per day leading up to the start of the season at the end of the month. Coaches, if you did not receive a capsule email and would like to participate, please fill out the questions below and send them to me at vmercoglia@lohud.com.
