The Viola Longhorns saw their season come to an end with an 8-1 loss to the host Taylor Tigers in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament on Saturday night at Taylor.

Viola — which ends its season at 26-3, 1A-2 North Conference and District champion and 1A Region 2 runner-up — managed just one run, coming in the fifth inning.

Brody Ninemire was 1 for 3 with a double, Trevor Himschoot went 1 for 2 with an RBI and Dalton Lund was 1 for 4 for the Longhorns.

Taylor scored one in the first, but plated seven runs during a big fourth inning.

Steffahn Smith took the loss, tossing 31/3 innings before being pulled during the fourth-inning flurry. The left-hander struck out four, but walked six and allowed three hits and five earned runs.

Lane Guffey finished up on the mound, striking out three and allowing three hits and two earned runs the rest of the way.

Taylor will face Scranton in one semifinal on Monday, while Armorel will battle County Line in the other.
