Theron Singles is on a mission.
The Leslie senior wrestler has fallen short of reaching the state finals each year of his high school career.
He hopes this is the year that changes.
“I have made it to regionals every year and I’ve been one match away every year so it’s been heartbreaking,” said Singles, who shares LSJ athlete of the week honors with Lansing Catholic’s Matthew Fata. “Hopefully this year I’ll make it through.”
Coming up short has provided Singles with extra motivation and a desire to work harder. And the 112-pounder has done that this season and hopes it pays dividends next month.
Singles reached a milestone last week when he picked up his 100th career win at the Alma Duals on Saturday. Singles beat a couple of ranked opponents en route to finishing 5-0 on Saturday. His performance at the Alma Duals was part of a 6-0 week and boosted his record for the season to 20-3.
“I had to work my hardest and had to beat ranked kids to get it,” Singles said.
In addition to a drive to make the state meet, Singles would like to help the Blackhawks to another district title.
“As a team we would like it to be the first time for Leslie for a team to win districts four years in a row,” Singles said. “This is our team goal for now.”
