As a wide receiver, it’s in Carter Frantz’s DNA to believe that no single defender can check him in jump-ball situations.
And in the second quarter of last week’s Division 7 district title game against Homer, the Dansville sophomore showed it.
After quarterback Clay Soule faked a pitch to his tailback — setting up the play-action pass — he launched the ball downfield to Frantz, who then decelerated before skyrocketing over the defensive back.
“When I saw the ball thrown, I knew I had a good chance at it,” said Frantz, whose grab was voted the LSJ prep video of the week. “The corner was pushing me to the outside and the ball was thrown on the inside, and I was able to make the catch.
“Sometimes I look for it (one-on-one), and if I see I do have it, we have a signal to let (Soule) know. And if he feels comfortable throwing it, then that’s what we do.”
The Aggies (10-1) went on to win the game, 35-21, and capture their first district championship in school history. Frantz said he hopes this Dansville squad, and its run, becomes a model for future teams to follow.
“We’ve been really pushing ourselves all throughout this year,” said Frantz, whose team will travel to face Detroit Loyola for a regional championship Friday night. “Getting this first district title for Dansville — it’s been success after success for us.”
