Trevor Mohnke’s performance last week against Jackson was one he’ll deposit in the memory bank.
After his team’s 1-0 lead transformed into a 1-1 tie toward the end of regulation, the Grand Ledge senior headed home the go-ahead goal in the first half of extra time. The Hunter Edwards-assisted score was voted the LSJ prep video of the week.
“It was probably one of my favorite goals I’ve ever scored,” Mohnke said. “It was definitely the biggest goal of my career. It came in extra time, it was the go-ahead goal. …It was big.”
The forward didn’t stop there. In the final half of extra time, he added another for insurance, which ended up sealing the 3-2 win.
Mohnke has nine goals on the season, which is second on the team, and has helped the Comets jump out to an 8-3-2 start. Last year, Grand Ledge exited the Division 1 playoffs in the opening round of districts, but, this year, Mohnke believes his side has the firepower to make a deep playoff run.
“We’re very humble, but we really feel like we can (compete) with anyone in our league and area,” he said. “We’re having one of the better years in Grand Ledge history so far.”
