Nick Myszak may have only scored one goal in this year’s CAAC Gold Cup tournament, but it was as important as any for Grand Ledge.
The No. 6-seeded Comets were tied with No. 3 seed Mason, 2-2, with under nine minutes to play when the junior ripped a left-footed strike. His shot whistled past the goalie’s diving arms and gave Grand Ledge a 3-2 victory in the first round of the annual competition.
It was also voted the LSJ prep video of the week.
“It was pretty amazing just being able to help my team move forward,” Myszak said. “It ricocheted back to me, I knew I was at the 18, and I had an opportunity to shoot it.”
The Comets (11-6-2) went on to beat No. 2 seed Okemos in the semifinals and advanced to their first Gold Cup final in school history. Grand Ledge ultimately lost in the championship, 3-1, to Division 2 No. 5-ranked East Lansing, but Myszak said the team’s long stay in the tournament better prepped them for what’s to come.
“Everyone was excited about (getting to the title game). We were all ready for it,” said Myszak, whose squad opens postseason play Tuesday in the Division 1 district tournament at Rockford. “It’s a nice preparation for us to get intense games before we play Caledonia.”
