LUCAS – The tag team of Mason Galco and Rueben Luna have been too much for opponents this season and Friday night was no exception.
The Cubs were unstoppable, while the Cadets couldn’t put it in drive.
In hosting the first round of the Division VII football playoffs, Lucas beat West Unity Hilltop 51-6. The victory sends the Cubs into Week 12 where it will play No. 7 Tiffin Calvert Friday night in a Region 24 semifinal game at a neutral site. Calvert beat Hicksville 42-35 in double OT.
“I’m just so happy for our seniors,” Lucas coach Scott Spitler said. “What a great community to win our first home playoff game.”
The Cubs were never in neutral. Lucas scored on its first eight possessions of the game, while Hilltop struggled with three 3-and-outs in the opening half.
Doing the bulk of the work for the Cubs were seniors’ Galco and Luna. Galco at running back ran for 161 yards on just 14 carries and three touchdowns in the first half alone, and Luna at quarterback ran for 82 more and two TDs, plus a 33-yard field goal as Lucas started the second half with a running clock.
“That’s us. That’s what got us here,” Spitler said. “We’ve got a good offensive line and I felt we controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. People want to focus on Mason, but hew have Jackson Hauger, Jeb Grover and Rueben Luna, and tonight it was (Luna).”
Galco was his typical self, rushing 25 times for 238 yards and five touchdowns. His 46-yard run to end the first quarter was of ESPN “SportsCenter” quality, as he somehow broke three tackles, kept his balance and went the distance for a 21-0 lead.
“There’s not a lot of space (in the Lucas wing-t) and the backs are patient,” Hilltop coach Andy Bentley said. “Even when there’s not a crease, he’s hopping over it.”
Luna finished with 92 yards on nine carries with a long of 54. He also passed for 61 yards on 6 of 9 throwing.
“I think it’s unselfishness,” Spitler said of his team. “It’s not about who gets the carries; it’s about the Lucas Cubs scoring.”
According to Lucas athletic director Eric Teague, there were 800 presale tickets sold between the two schools with more than 500 sold in Lucas this week … Lucas put up 440 yards of total offense with 379 coming on the ground … the Cubs recorded 25 first downs … Hilltop was limited to 22 yards rushing on 16 tries and 131 yards of total offense … The Cadets scored on the final play of the game on a Tyler Suboski 12-yard pass from Quinn Smith … Hilltop had eight first downs.
