CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mallard Creek completed the regular season with a 35-23 victory over North Meck.
On the game’s opening possession, North Meck quarterback Kendall Coles was picked off, setting up a touchdown drive capped by a James Smith run. Brad Baker’s team answered after the miscue, driving down the field at the end of the first quarter for a 20-yard field goal making it 7-3 Mallard Creek.
In the second frame, the Mavs turned it on. Smith rushed for another touchdown and followed it up with a touchdown pass to Javon Harbison to give the Creek a 21-3 lead. On the final play of the half, Mallard Creek blocked a North Meck field goal attempt and returned it all the way for a score, giving the home crowd something else to cheer about, taking a 28-3 lead into the locker room.
The Vikings tried to rally in the fourth quarter, scoring twice in the game’s final five minutes, but were unable to close in on Mallard Creek.
The Mavericks will host a playoff game next week at home.
