N.J. high school coach and former NHL player Jim Dowd waives court appearance

Jim Dowd, a former New Jersey Devil and current Shore Conference ice hockey coach who was accused of assaulting a high school player, waived his appearance at Wall Township Municipal Court on Tuesday morning.

Dowd, who coaches the Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach cooperative varsity program was removed from coaching Monday night’s game with Rumson-Fair Haven after a parent filed a complaint with police claiming Dowd kicked a 16-year old player in the back, according to a report initially made by News 12 New Jersey.

Manasquan Superintendent Dr. Frank Kasyan was reached for comment on Tuesday morning and said that no immediate disciplinary action will be taken against Dowd.

“There is no disciplinary action being taken at this point because the police are still investigating the complaint and I have nothing to discipline,” Kasyan said.

“Up until this point Jim has been a good upstanding citizen and a perfect coach for us,” Kasyan added. “His reputation in the community has been great. I’ve been to games, I have seen him coach and he has been wonderful with the kids.”

Kasyan also confirmed that Dowd has been temporarily relieved of his head coaching duties until the investigation of the complaint filed has been completed by the Wall Township Police Department.

Kasyan named Manasquan assistant coach Tom Matthews as the interim head coach of the Warriors and has called a special Board of Education meeting for Friday, January 16 to discus the matter further.

The aforementioned parent filed simple assault charges against Dowd and though no further details about the case have been made available at this time, Lieutenant Peter Lokerson of the Wall Township Police Department confirmed that a complaint against Dowd was filed and that the complaint is being reviewed.

The incident being reviewed occurred on Wednesday, January 7 at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall when Red Bank Regional traveled to the home rink of Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach.

Calls placed to Dowd and his representation at the Law Offices of Charney & Roberts LLC have net yet been returned.

Dowd, a former Brick Township high school player, was hired in April 2014 as head coach of the Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach ice hockey team.

Prior to his coaching position with the Warriors, Dowd was a 17-year NHL veteran and a Stanley Cup Champion with the New Jersey Devils in 1994-95.
