Hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter, Manogue’s Tawni Henderson helped ignite the Miner’s offense as they went on to defeat McQueen 70-33 in the girls basketball Division I Northern Region Tournament quarterfinal game held at Manogue Wednesday night.
The Miners opened the game with their usual press disrupting McQueen as it tried to set up its half-court offense. The pressure forced a number of turnovers that allowed Manogue to score on quick transition plays.
Benefiting from the turnovers, Breezi Holt added 8 points to Manogue’s first quarter efforts.
“We came into this game wanting to work on our defense so that we don’t get lost on long balls,” said Holt. “We played really hard and we played together and we were all incorporated into our offense.”
La-Torae Nixon put up 4 points for the Miners along with Katie Turner’s 3 points in the first quarter. Manogue closed out the first quarter ahead 28-6.
McQueen stepped up its defensive intensity in the second quarter and was able to alter shots, but at the expense of personal fouls. Breezi Holt and Katie Turner both were perfect on their free throws with each hitting 4-of-4. Bebe Briggs added two more free throws in the second.
Turner also hit two 3-point shots as she led the Miners with 12 points in the quarter helping Manogue close out the half up 52-17.
The Miners changed their lineup after the half. They also moved away from their press, opening up the pace of the game.
The Lancer’s Sierra Morales scored 4 points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, McQueen turned to Haylie Mathis who hit a 3-pointer and was 2-for-5 on free throw shooting in the quarter.
In addition to scoring 4 points for McQueen in the second quarter, Sadaria McAlister also helped bring the energy for her team.
“They like to run, I like to run too, so why not run with them,” said McAlister. “With me running down the court it … gets the energy going when you get the fast break and start scoring then everybody starts scoring.”
Faced with a fast-pace in the third quarter, McQueen was held to a 3-point shot by Sarah Higgins and a two-point bucket by McAlister.
Much of the fourth quarter was played with a running clock which limited McQueen’s scoring. Isabel Warren and Holly White both scored with a 3-point shot. McAlister and Julie Roser each added a two point shot for the Lancers.
