GRAND CHUTE – It was a tough end for an otherwise stellar season for the Marathon baseball team.
Undone by defensive miscues and a nightmarish inning, the third-ranked Red Raiders suffered an 11-3 setback against No. 2 La Crosse Aquinas on Wednesday in a WIAA Division 3 state semifinal at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
Aquinas will take on top-ranked Lake Country Lutheran on Thursday at noon in the state championship.
The Blugolds (27-3) sent 10 batters to the plate in an explosive seven-run seventh to grab an 11-1 lead and bust open the game. The first seven batters reached safely, including Alex Dee, who belted a two-run double to left-center that chased Marathon starter Ryan Gassner.
Dee finished with three hits and three RBI, while Blugolds starter Alex Schulte surrendered two earned runs over five innings to pick up the win.
Matt Braun ripped a two-run single for Marathon (26-3) in the sixth and finished with three hits and three RBI. Five Red Raiders errors led to five unearned runs.
