Chalk one up to experience for Novi Detroit Catholic Central following a ninth-place showing in the MHSAA Division 1 boys ski finals held Monday at Boyne Highlands.
Marquette captured its third consecutive state title with 47 points, followed by Traverse City Central (60), Clarkston (114), Holly (130), Rochester Adams (204), Traverse City West (214), Brighton (221), University of Detroit-Jesuit (271 and Detroit CC (284).
Clarkston’s Derek VanItallie was the individual winner in slalom and giant slalom with times of 1:05.3 and 56.62, respectively.
The Shamrocks, led by senior captain Drew Davis’ 26th (1:02.59), skied to a seventh in the morning giant slalom, but finished only three racers during the afternoon slalom program and with penalty points placed ninth.
Freshman Sawyer Reed garnered 26th (1:18.8) in slalom to pace the Shamrocks.
Among CC’s overall slalom finishers, while factoring in individual state qualifiers, were Reed, 34th (1:18.8); Josh Blossfele, 41st (1:21.88); and Kyle Spillane, 57th (1:59.3).
Novi’s Mitch Goodman rebounded from a poor first run to finish 51st overall in 1:32.48. His second run time placed him 16th.
The Shamrocks’ overall giant slalom finishers included Davis, 35th (1:02.59); Max Tokarz, 39th (1:03.04); Reed, 43rd (1:03.7); Justin Woolhiser, 1:05.41; and Blake Richert, 48th (1:06.48).
CC’s Logan Freismuth did not finish the slalom or giant slalom.
“There were only two seniors on the team, Drew Davis and Kyle Spillance, so it was a great experience for the younger racers to take forward,” CC coach Tom Gable said.
In the Southeastern Michigan Ski League Championships on Friday at Pine Knob, Novi finished eighth in the boys standings as Andrew Jamison placed 26th in giant slalom, while Ross O’Donnell took 35th.
On the girls side, Unie Gu became Novi’s first varsity girls skier to compete in the SEMSL meet and placed 47th in giant slalom and 53rd in slalom.
Both teams return all their skiers with the exception of Elaine Hamilton on the girls team.
