Two years removed from a disturbing hazing incident and six months after the resulting rape allegations against him were dropped, former Somerville (Mass.) High School soccer player Galileo Mondol is suing the city over what’s become of his final teenaged years.

According to a lawsuit obtained by The Boston Globe, Mondol is seeking $1 million, claiming that city and school officials were aware of a history of hazing and led a smear campaign against him in order to cover up a system-wide failure to protect the victim.

The $1 million suit alleges that Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Anthony Pierantozzi, the school district’s superintendent at the time, and soccer coach George Scarpelli violated Mondol’s civil rights by engaging in a zealous campaign to have him arrested, and manipulating witnesses and victims into giving misleading statements to police.

In August 2013, a Somerville freshman was raped with a broom handle during a school-sponsored soccer camp in the Berkshires. That brutality is accepted as fact. Two 16-year-olds since pled guilty and were sent to the Department of Youth Services. Prosecution and defense attorneys presented conflicting accounts about Mondol’s involvement as either a witness or participant, and the district attorney ultimately dropped the assault charges.

“During the course of the investigation, there was some conflicting information about [Mondol’s] involvement and culpability,” Berkshire District Attorney David F. Capeless told The Boston Globe. “After the two other defendants plead guilty and were sentenced, it was decided it would be in everybody’s best interest to end the case right there.”

At least, that was the hope in April. Only, the allegations have continued to plague Mondol, who was suspended from Somerville, removed from the soccer team and currently attends nearby Cambridge Rindge and Latin School as a 19-year-old senior.

“Everyone always assumes that I’m a rapist,” Mondol told the paper. “It feels like I’m always a step behind because of this stigma that follows me.”

While school officials claimed at the time this was an isolated incident, Mondol’s lawsuit alleges hazing was prevalent during this and other school-sponsored trips, and his attorneys believe the school failed to provide proper supervision in the Berkshires.
