The South Lyon Matcats wrestling club celebrated the opening of a new training facility while also working in some athletes at two different meets.
“We celebrated the opening of our new training facility at the Playground in South Lyon on Friday,” coach Steve Richardson said. “With the size of our group, it was really important for us to have a facility of our own so we could train and practice safely and during hours that accommodate our busy schedules. (The owner of the Playground) really respects what we are doing for the sport of wrestling both in South Lyon and across the Midwest. He jumped at the opportunity to help us take the next step.
“We are now one of the only youth wrestling programs that own their own mats, along with a training room to call their own. With our reputation of great kids, great wrestling and awards to show for it, we have already been contacted by several clubs about hosting clinics, dual meets and joint practices. We are also now a host practice facility for Michigan Team Select, a group of Michigan’s best elementary wrestlers who compete in dual meets and events all over the country.”
A couple of Matcats competed Saturday in Sanford. Benny Leece took home his second title of the season, while Travis Richardson wrestled seven times in a huge 25-man bracket to claim fourth place.
The Matcats also competed Sunday at Livonia Franklin, with 59 athletes in attendance. In all, 51 of the 59 Matcats placed.
“I’m really proud of our group,” Richradson said. “They had fun, wrestled hard and were there for their teammates more than any other club present.”
