Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is one win away from its fifth consecutive state championship in boys basketball.

The Monarchs beat No. 12 Fairfax 51-40 in the Open Division Southern California Regional championship game Saturday in a much anticipated rematch.

Mater Dei beat Fairfax 47-34 at the Nike Extravaganza in February. Fairfax led that game at halftime.

This time, Mater Dei was up 31-13 at halftime after Fairfax shot 1-for-9 from three-point range in the first half. The Lions cut the lead to 41-35 with 3:08 remaining in the game.

Fairfax (32-3) was without Donald Gipson, who injured a knee in the semifinals. He was on the bench with crutches. Lindsey Drew had 17 points.

For Mater Dei (29-4), Notre Dame-bound star Rex Pflueger had 15 first-half points and finished with 23.

The Monarchs were No. 47 in the most recent Super 25 rankings but expect them to rise when the next rankings are released Monday.

Next up is a challenge against Oakland Bishop O’Dowd and 6-10 star Ivan Rabb next Saturday.
