Expect to see some shuffling in the Top 5 of the new USA TODAY High School Sports’ Super 25 for girls basketball.
No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) lost a thrilling Southern Section Open Division title game to Chaminade 64-63.
The Monarchs are 28-2 with both losses coming to Chaminade (Chatsworth) and both by a single point.
Isabel Newman hit a baseline jumper with four seconds left for the winning margin Saturday. Chaminade (24-3) was led by Paige Fecske with 20 points.
Mater Dei led by 14 in the third quarter and by nine after three.
Chaminade entered the week just outside the Super 25 rankings, but that figures to change next week.
Mater Dei’s loss should impact No. 3 St. Mary’s (Stockton, Calif.). The Rams won their eighth consecutive Division I section championship game and 16th overall with a 78-55 victory against McClatchy (Sacramento).
Freshman Aquira DeCosta, ranked No. 2 in the Class of 2018, led the Rams with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
St. Mary’s is now 30-1 with the one loss coming to Blackman from Tennessee at the Nike Tournament of Champions event in Arizona before Christmas.
