Mauldin will be in the hunt for a sixth state title when the competitive cheer championships are held Saturday at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.
The Mavericks finished second to host River Bluff in the Class AAAA state qualifier Nov. 14 in Lexington. River Bluff had a score of 344; Mauldin was runner-up with 340 and defending champion Dutch Fork third with 337.
Wade Hampton finished seventh. Easley also was among the 16 teams that advanced in Class AAAA.
Only Chapin (10), Liberty (seven) and Dutch Fork (six) have won more state titles than Mauldin and Eastside, which also has five. Mauldin’s most recent came in 2011, the second of back-to-back championships. The Mavericks finished fifth last year.
River Bluff won the state championship in Class AAA in 2013 and was runner-up to Dutch Fork in AAAA in 2014.
Blue Ridge finished fourth in the Class AAA qualifier (also Nov. 14 at River Bluff), behind Chapin, Belton-Honea Path and St. James. Wren and Eastside also advanced to Saturday’s championships.
Chapin, the defending champion, has won eight of the past 10 years.
Liberty, which won seven consecutive state championships from 2006-2012, finished seventh in the state qualifier. Powdersville also advanced to Saturday’s state competition.
Chesnee, the two-time defending champion, took first in the Class AA qualifier Nov. 11 at White Knoll High School in Lexington.
Admission for the state finals is $10 (5 and under admitted free), and the doors will open to the public at 9:15 a.m.
