Mauldin hosted Lugoff-Elgin in 1rst round volleyball playoffs Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015.

MAULDIN – Early in each of the first two sets at Mauldin High School Thursday night, Mauldin and Lugoff-Elgin played a lot of back-and-forth.

Each time though, the Mavericks took control in the second half of the set and eventually swept the first-round AAAA volleyball match 3-0 over the Demons.

“We really focus on that a lot in practice, being able to pull away,” Mauldin coach Val Thoms said. “Once we find what’s working, I say ‘Feed the beast.’ Feed the hitter that is scoring those points until the other team adjusts. It allows you to build that run, build that momentum.”

With the victory, Mauldin (24-5) advances to the second round Nov. 3 against either Nation Ford or Easley. If it’s Nation Ford, Mauldin will go on the road. They would host Easley.

Key to Mauldin’s win was its defense and its ability to keep volleys alive.

“We do have very good defense, very relentless defense,” said Thoms. “It is fun to watch them play. They chase down everything.”

As a team, the Mavs had 70 digs over the three sets. Senior Kaitlyn Arledge led the way with 19.

Mauldin also had some success at the net, registering 32 kills and 12 blocks. Senior Brittany Tepedino had nine kills while freshman Collette Romp added six.

The first set featured four ties and two lead changes early, but the Mavs trailed only at 2-1. Leading 13-12, Mauldin went on a six-point run that gave it a cushion it used en route to a 25-19 win.

Lugoff-Elgin kept fighting back to tie Mauldin four times early in the second set and grabbed a 9-7 lead with five unanswered points. The Mavs responded and pulled ahead 12-11. The Demons tied it at 12-12, but Mauldin went ahead 13-12 and gradually pulled away for another 25-19 win.

The Mavs used a six-point run to jump to an 8-2 lead in the third set and did not allow Lugoff-Elgin to get closer than four points. Mauldin won the clinching third set 25-13.
