The McKenzie Rebels’ season has been an up-and-down one with some big wins and some surprising losses.
Friday night, the Rebels left little doubt in the game as they used a strong third quarter en route to a 61-7 region win over the Halls Tigers. With the win, the Rebels will host Riverside next Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
“I was proud of the way we executed tonight,” McKenzie head coach Wade Comer said. “Halls has tons of athletes on their team and they did a good job of getting them the ball in space tonight. I thought our defense played really well keeping their athletes contained.”
“It was a very solid performance by those guys tonight.”
McKenzie’s offense also put on a pretty impressive display of their own.
McKenzie scored its first touchdown of the game on a quarterback sneak by Jack Surber from the 1-yard line with 4:50 left in the first quarter. That was only the beginning of the night for the Rebels’ quarterback.
Along with the opening touchdown run, Surber also added another 7-yard touchdown run as well as touchdown passes of six, seven and 65 yards.
“We had a very balanced attack tonight,” Comer said. “Surber seems to be getting back to 100 precent and we did a good job of blocking for him tonight. Our receivers also did a very solid job as well.”
Donavan Foley lead all receivers in the game with 148 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
The ground game was also efficient for the Rebel offense as Eric Robinson ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
“This was a great performance by us in all facets of the game,” Comer said. “Our offense, defense and special teams all did a great job for us.”
With the win, the Rebels will host the Riverside Panthers, a week 9 opponent for the Rebels that they beat 35-14.
“From here, we host Riverside again next week in the first round of the playoffs. We can’t take any team for granted right now, but I feel like our guys are playing their best football at the right time,” Comer said.
“I’m pretty confident that our guys are going to look forward to the challenge and will come out and play some great football next week.”
