Griffin Garrison scored seven of the Rockets’ 11 goals in the invitational McNicholas recently hosted.

Recently, McNicholas’ boys soccer team hosted its second annual summer invitational.

And for the second year in a row, it was a success. Rockets coach Jason Peters is hopeful the event will continue to grow in the years to come.

“It doubled in size from the first time around, which is a great feat for a tournament,” Peters said. “This tournament isn’t so much about winning as it is about player development.”

Not only that, it’s about getting the players used to playing on turf fields again.

The coach said he’s even received verbal commitments for teams from Indiana and around the Cleveland area for next year.

This year, 15 teams were divided into three brackets. Wyoming, Indian Hill and Glen Este were the bracket winners.

“There was good competition,” he said.

McNicholas took second in its bracket, losing to Wyoming. Peters said he was excited to see where his group’s strengths and weaknesses are and who will step up to compete with his upperclassmen.

One strong point from the tournament was Rockets’ senior forward/midfielder Griffin Garrison. He scored seven of the team’s 11 goals.

Peters will look for good things from him this fall and will count on his 12 seniors to lead the Rockets to a good season.
