ALMOND — With four of its five offensive linemen returning, one question surrounding the Almond-Bancroft football team entering the 2015 season was who would fill the last remaining starting spot?
The answer turned out to be Taylor Kim.
Despite having played football for only one season before this year, Kim, a 6-foot-1, 280-pound senior, has stepped right in as the starting center and the Eagles haven’t skipped a beat.
“Taylor did a nice job the first couple weeks (before the season started) earning that fifth lineman spot that was open,” Almond-Bancroft coach Andrew Bradley said. “He stood out right from the start of practice.”
Kim has joined veteran linemen Garett Yonke, Cole Warzynski, Christian Noth and Jordan Kealiher to dominate the line of scrimmage and enable the Eagles to average 52.1 points through seven games.
In just his second year of varsity football, Kim has been instrumental in creating huge holes for running backs Austin Bunders, Derek Baumgartner and Noah Kollock.
In addition, the first-year starter has helped to provide A-B junior quarterback Wyatt Richtmyre with all the time he needs to complete more than 65 percent of his passes for nearly 1,000 yards.
“With new linemen you worry about the communication piece, but it really hasn’t skipped a beat,” Bradley said. “Taylor has picked up his responsibilities in our blocking schemes really quickly and our five linemen have worked well together.
“We have seen a variety of defenses through our games and Taylor has done well adjusting, along with the rest of the guys.”
When did you get involved in football and what about the sport appeals to you? I joined football my junior year in high school. I regret every day not joining my freshman and sophomore years. The thing that appeals to me the most is being able to hit people.
As the only new starter in the offensive line, how did you see your role on this Almond-Bancroft football team entering the season? I saw my role pretty ‘’snappy’’ being the only new lineman and the center.
Where do you feel you’ve made the greatest strides as a player during you’re A-B football career? My biggest stride as a football player probably came last year. Just being able to play varsity last year with it being my first year of football.
What is your pre-game routing leading up to the opening kickoff? It’s really nothing special. I hang out with my friends Cole, Christian and Clayton before the game. We normally hang out at my house and play video games.
What has been the highlight of your football career up until this point? Being able to play on the line with Cole (Warzynski), Christian (Noth), Garett (Yonke), and Jordan (Kealiher). They’re a great group of guys.
Who has been your role model growing up and what lesson have they taught you that you’ll take with you the rest of your life? I’d have to say my role model would be my stepdad Dennis. He taught me that you can never give up on life.
If you could choose to meet one person in the history of the world, dead or alive, who would you want to meet, and what would you like to find out about them? Neil Armstrong. I’d want to know how the first moon walk was.
Name something on your bucket list that you absolutely have to get done by the time you turn 40: Buy a brand new Denali Duramax.
What is your greatest fear? Heights.
Tell us something about yourself the average person may not know about you: I can solve the Rubik’s cube. My fastest time is 32 seconds.
How would you define happiness in your life? As long as you are with the people you love and that love you, that’s all you need.
What can’t you live without? My friends.
