Astronaut won the District 8-1A wrestling tournament Wednesday with 236.5 points. Space Coast came in second; Rockledge, third; and Titusville in fourth place.
Cody Silvestri scored 22 points for the War Eagles in the 126-pound weight class, beating Kolin Marsh from Satellite in the first-place match. Silvestri’s record for the season is 27-12.
“I just kept my focus and wasn’t messing around before matches, and I stayed off my knees,” Silvestri said. “I did what I was supposed to do.”
Astronaut coach Joe Murano said that competing outside of the county against bigger teams in places like Clay and Osceola counties helped prepare his wrestlers to win. Murano believes it’s all mental at this point if they want to keep winning.
“We gotta get in a frame of mind of thinking very positive,” Murano said. “Probably 70 percent of the game is mental.”
Although Titusville finished fourth overall, Matthew Seymour dominated the other 138-pounders to win his weight class. Seymour won by fall over Satellite’s Tyler Hansen in just over three minutes.
“One thing I’ve learned this year is it’s the small points here and there at the end of the periods that are winning big matches,” Seymour said.
The top four finishers from each weight class will go on to wrestle in the regional tournament next week.
