FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Sam Bruce was unable to attend a ceremony that was supposed to have been held in his honor, and the reason why might be of some concern for the University of Miami.
Bruce, who has committed to the Miami Hurricanes, was in Columbus, Ohio this weekend on an official visit of the Ohio State campus. His plane was late getting back to Fort Lauderdale on Monday, causing him to miss the ceremony where he was to be presented his Under Armour All-American jersey.
“That’s difficult to say,” Aquinas Coach Roger Harriott said when asked if Bruce might de-commit from the Hurricanes to play for the top-ranked Buckeyes. “The industry is so volatile.
“Sam has been pretty firm in his commitment to the University of Miami. He hasn’t given us any indication that he wants to de-commit. “
Even so, just the fact that Bruce was in Columbus will surely send shock waves to Canes fans, many of whom are already upset with the declining state of the program.
Worse yet from the Miami perspective is the fact that Bruce was in Columbus with his Aquinas teammate, defensive end Nick Bosa, who is an Ohio State commit.
“I think it’s a bigger shot than people think,” Bosa said when asked about Bruce possibly switching his college choice. “I can’t get into his head. But I think we have a good shot.”
