MURFREESBORO – After missing some key free throws in the fourth quarter, Siegel’s Deante Miller wanted to redeem himself.
He had the opportunity to do that in overtime, hitting the game-winning shot at the buzzer as Siegel defeated Smyrna 64-62 Tuesday to give the Stars their first District 7-AAA win of the season.
Siegel inbounded the ball with 14 seconds left and worked it in the paint to Miller.
He took a shot at the baseline, missed it, got his own rebound, took another shot, missed it before Braxton Eddings got the rebound and tipped it back to Miller.
The third shot – as the buzzer – sounded banked into the basket.
“I had a floater,” Miller said. “(When it missed), all I could think of was getting the rebound and going back up. I owe it to my coach.”
The Stars led throughout the second half and led by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter at 54-39. But the Bulldogs went on an 18-3 run to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Jaylen Johnson scored 15 points for Smyrna in the fourth quarter to lead his team back. He finished with a team-high 24 for the Bulldogs (8-10 overall, 1-4 in District 7-AAA).
The Stars (6-9, 1-3) were only able to connect on 4 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and missed several layups.
“We couldn’t make free throws and missed some layups and they started doubting themselves,” Siegel coach Ben Dotson said. “Give credit to Smyrna, they came out aggressive, they didn’t stop attacking and we kind of laid down a little bit for them.
“I don’t know if we took it for granted – right now, we don’t have the opportunity to take anybody for granted.”
Siegel went on a 12-1 run to close out the second quarter, breaking a 22-22 tie and giving the Stars a 34-23 halftime lead.
The Stars maintained the lead through the third quarter and increased it to 15 in the fourth quarter before Smyrna’s comeback.
“A win’s a win, and we needed a win in the worst way,” Dotson said. “I didn’t care who it was –Smyrna, Blackman, Siegel Middle, anybody. We needed a win.”
