The fourth-ranked Braves gave up an early run, squandered a couple of golden chances and lost to No. 3 Hauser 2-0 Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Class A North Daviess Semistate.
“We just couldn’t get any solid hits in a row,” said Borden coach Michele Schindler.
Borden starter Paige Schindler, the coach’s daughter, admitted she was a little frustrated after the narrow loss.
“I was a little upset that we couldn’t get the big hit at the right time,” said Schindler, a sophomore. “I was holding them. We just couldn’t get a bat on the ball.”
The Braves (23-4) fell behind in the bottom of the first when Leslie Sims, an Indiana State University recruit, beat out a dribbler to shortstop.
Using her speed, Sims stole second base and then third. As she slid into third base, the throw from Borden catcher Keisha Curry went into left field and Sims scored.
It stayed 1-0 until he bottom of the fifth inning, when Sims tripled to center field and then scored when her sister, Tessa Sims, hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
“I was really amazed by her speed,” Schindler said of Sims. “She used it to her advantage.”
For Borden, its best opportunity came in the top of the fifth inning, when Carrie Farvour started the inning by hitting a single to left field.
With one out, Emily Parson reached on a bloop infield single near second base. Then Riley Schindler reached on a bunt, as Hauser pitcher Tessa Sims fielded the ball but threw late to first base.
With the bases loaded and one out, Paige Schindler popped out to the Paige Miller, the third baseman, in foul territory and Haley Shouse struck out.
Michele Schindler said Borden’s pitching and defense was good enough.
“If our bats were on, it wouldn’t have mattered,” she said. “We should’ve won the game. We should’ve won it.”
Despite the 2-0 deficit and missed chances, Paige Schindler said she never lost hope.
“Until the very end, I thought we had a chance,” she said. “We were hitting them. They were just catching them. … They weren’t letting anything drop.”
Paige Schindler said her young team — full of freshmen and sophomores — came in a little nervous.
“I was just trying to calm them down,” she said. “I told them it’s just a game. … We didn’t know what to expect. I think our first experience here (in the semistate) was a little nerve-racking.”
The Jets (24-4) advanced to the finals of the semistate against host North Daviess (19-10), a 5-2 winner over Indianapolis Lutheran in the first game.
The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and pulled away from the Saints (18-10).
