Senior night will carry even more significance for one Martin Luther King senior Friday night.
MLK standout Jalen Duke will be honored in front of his home fans as the Royals’ all-time leading scorer Friday when they take on Stratford.
The 6-5 guard has amassed 1.663 points in his time at MLK.
“It’s very special,” Duke said. “There’s been a lot of great players that have come before me. To be honored like that is pretty big.”
For first-year head coach Brent Burns walking in to a new program with a player like Duke is a blessing.
“It’s definitely nice to walk into it with a scorer like Jalen,” Burns said of Duke. “It’s nice to know you’re pretty much guaranteed 20 points from him if not 25 a night.”
While known for his scoring ability, Burns says Duke does a lot more for the Royals than score.
“He does a little bit of everything for us,” Burns said. “He’s also probably our leading rebounder on top of being our leading scorer and he’s probably one of the best defenders on the team.”
Duke will graduate in May and look to continue playing basketball at the next level. He has received interest from a number of schools and has received official offers from Tennessee State and Kennesaw State.
Duke will get the chance to add to his record Friday when MLK takes on Stratford at 7:30.
