Mount Mansfield High School senior Alec Eschholz was named Vermont’s boys track and field athlete of the year by Gatorade, the organization announced in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports on Friday.
Eschholz receives the honor, which is based on athletic excellence, academic achievement and high character, for the third straight year.
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Eschholz captured four individual championships at the Division I state meet for the second straight year, a performance that included lowering his own state record in the 300-meter hurdles to 37.53 seconds. Eschholz also set a new standard in the 110 hurdles, knocking his state mark to 14.08 seconds.
“Alec Eschholz may be the ultimate — smart, fast and so dedicated,” St. Johnsbury coach Chip Langmaid said in a news release. “Just when it seems he can’t get faster, he lowers his records.”
Bound for Dartmouth in the fall to continue his track career, Eschholz has maintained a 3.87 grade-point average in the classroom, is member of MMU’s athletic leadership council and has volunteered locally assisting community-beautification projects in addition to serving as a youth track coach and youth soccer referee.
