Like many of their offerings, Moeller High School has had tremendous success in boys volleyball. The Crusaders have state championship trophies from 1997, 2004, 2005,2007, 2009 and 2012.
They were Division I state semifinalists in 2013 and coach Matt McLaughlin is looking to get them back in the state hunt this season after finishing second in the Greater Catholic League-South last season. Moeller finished behind St. Xavier and tied with Elder at 3-3 in the league and 18-8 overall.
Returning starters for Moeller are senior libero Chris Hackman, senior outside hitter Justin Deyhle, senior middle Nick Wright, junior middle Jason Bruggemann and junior outside hitter David Wernery. Junior right-side hitter Connor McNamara is always expected to be a factor.
Hackman made GCL-South first team last year as a junior.
McLaughlin, coming back from an off-season appendectomy himself, is proud of his team’s off-season work ethic.
“We added conditioning to out off-season program and I think our players have come into the season in great shape,” he said. “They’re a very athletic group of players and I think it’s going to pay dividends for them. They’re push themselves in practice and are hungry after a bit of a roller-coaster season last year. They push the each other in practice and are setting the bar high as a team.”
Also on the Moeller roster are defensive specialist Johnny Rickert, defensive specialist Connor Peed, defensive specialist Harry Savarese, setter Ryan Frank, setter Chad Mustard and defensive specialist Logan Sheets. McLaughlin is assisted by Kevin Brandner and Mike Chandler and student coaches Gus Vogel and Brad Buller.
Moeller visits La Salle April 10 and then is in a tri-match with Lakewood St. Edward and Hilliard Darby April 11 outside of Columbus.
