There’s a new single-game sharpshooting champ in Montana, and he may be just getting started.

As reported by Missoula CBS affiliate KPAX, Valley Christian freshman Cameron Ireland connected on 12 three-pointers during his team’s 93-66 rout of Two Eagle River. The 12 makes came as part of a 12-for-22 outing for Ireland, who scored a total of 42 points in the win.

Ireland said that he could tell he was in for a good night when his first couple shots went it, but he hardly could have imagined breaking the state record while still a freshman.

“It just kind of happened,” Ireland told KPAX. “I knew I was shooting well. I didn’t know how many I had shot. But yeah, it just kind of evolved from our offense.”

Ireland is averaging more than 18 points-per-game for surging Valley Christian, which leads its district as January winds to a close. There’s no doubt that Ireland’s surge and increased confidence has been a big part of that success, as noted by Valley Christian coach Aaron Hill:

“In the six weeks prior to the season he shot probably 10,000 shots coming in on his own, putting in extra time shooting. So for me I love the validation of the work. I don’t think he’s going to hit 12 very often, if ever again. But I do think he’s going to have a lot more good shooting nights ahead.”
