CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – It took a while and a lot of runs, but in the end Montgomery Central’s baseball team captured its third District 11-AA tournament championship in the past four years with a 16-13 victory against Creek Wood on Wednesday night in Charlotte.
The victory was the third win in the last four days for the Indians, who used five pitchers to secure the score-happy game: Clayton Walker, Zach Norfleet, T.J. Sauers, Bryce Clark and Bill Hamilton.
Hamilton and Walker each had four hits to lead a team that improved its record to 22-13. Bryce Devers and Ben Sleigh had two hits each while Devin Prewitt, Zach Slay and Peyton Delvendahl each had three walks that led to three runs scored by the trio.
Montgomery Central reached the district championship game on the heels of a 10-5 victory against Waverly on Tuesday.
Central now turns its attention to the region tournament, where it will play host to Cascade at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Creek Wood (29-6) will travel for its region contest.
Montgomery Central’s girls tennis team had its season come to an end in the region tournament as Summertown beat the Lady Indians 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Yuka Fujiwara was the only Lady Indians player to win a single match. She beat Summertown’s Anna Gotbatoff in three sets after losing the opening set 6-0. Fujiwara responded with wins in the second (7-5) and third (7-5) sets but it wasn’t enough.
However, the Lady Indians had their most successful season in 16 years. Central captured its first District 11-A/AA title since 1999.
Academy baseball stars honored
Clarksville Academy’s Michael Conn was named to the All District 10-A Team while Trevor Mace, John Austin Peay and Brayden Batson were named Honorable Mention. Phil Smith was named All Tournament.
