Morgan, Craig earn all-state honors for West High

In four years at West High, Mikaela Morgan and Dani Craig have built an impressive list of accomplishments.

The duo added one more to that list on Tuesday.

Craig and Morgan were both named to the Class 5A All-state team released by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

Morgan was named to the Class 5A first team, while Craig was a third-team selection.

City High freshman Ashley Joens was a second-team selection, joining the West High duo on 5A team.

The all-state honors come after a difficult 2014 season for West High.

Craig missed all of last season with a torn ACL, while Morgan shouldered the load for a team that missed the state tournament for the first time since 2010.

“They’ve meant a lot to our program,” West High coach BJ Mayer said. “Having them go through what they each went through last year this really is a fitting end to their careers.”

Both Craig and Morgan had the best seasons of their careers this year while helping West High to a 22-3 record and a berth in the state semifinals.

The 5-foot-11 Morgan led the Women of Troy in scoring (13.2), rebounding (5.6) and steals (2.7) while shooting a career-high 53 percent from the field.

A University of Northern Iowa recruit, Morgan shot 44 percent from 3-point range this season and 68 percent from the free-throw line.

“She has always been a good defender, but I thought her offensive game came a long way this year,” Mayer said of Morgan. “She was more experienced this year after having to do a little bit more last season, and I think she really stepped up her game.”

Craig averaged 11.6 points and led West High with 121 assists, third-best in 5A this season in her first year back after ACL surgery.

The Cal State Fullerton recruit shot 40 percent from 3-point range and ranked fifth in 5A with 51 made 3-pointers.

“You knew she was going to get back,” Mayer said of Craig. “She did a lot to make sure she was ready when the season started, and I think the more she played this year the more comfortable she got.”

The 5-foot-9 Joens was a second-team selection after ranking sixth in 5A in scoring at 18.7 points per game.

Joens helped City High to a 15-8 record in a berth in the regional finals, leading the Little Hawks in rebounds (6.7), assists (2.5) and steals (2.2).

The freshman led the state in both free throws made (160) and attempted (228).
