MIDDLEBURY – Twenty-six-time defending title-holder Mount Anthony seized control on Day 1 of the high school wrestling state championships on Friday but St. Johnsbury hasn’t let the Patriots run away with anything just yet.
With 98.5 points heading into Day 2 today, MAU holds a 21.5 point edge on the Hilltoppers. Both squads have every wrestler still available to score points, too.
Mount Anthony, which started the tournament with eight No. 1 seeds, has a semifinalist in 13 of the 14 weight classes (all except 138 pounds), while St. Johnsbury has 10 semifinalists and four wrestlers in the consolation bracket.
Mount Mansfield sits in third place with 46 points. Vergennes (43) is fourth and host Middlebury (42) is fifth. (See local scores for complete team standings.)
Today’s action begins with consolation quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. Semifinals take place at 11 a.m. and the finals begin at roughly 6:15 p.m.
•Rebels set state record: The South Burlington boys 4×800 meter relay squad set a new state record at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass., on Friday.
The Rebels — James Gregoire, Brandon Moran, Joey Staples and Sean MacDonald — took seventh place in a time of 8 minutes 8.71 seconds, more than four seconds better than the previous mark set by St. Johnsbury.
