Mount Healthy's David Montgomery named Division III state offensive player of the year

Mount Healthy senior quarterback David Montgomery was named the Associated Press Division III state offensive player of the year Tuesday night.

Mount Healthy QB David Montgomery was named the Division III state offensive player of the year tonight.

Mount Healthy QB David Montgomery was named the Division III state offensive player of the year tonight.

Montgomery, who is 5 feet 11 and 225 pounds, rushed for 2,707 yards and 41 touchdowns and threw for 726 yards and seven touchdowns for Mount Healthy (8-4), which was a regional semifinalist.

His 2,707 rushing yards would be No. 21 on the Ohio High School Athletic Association state record list for most in a season.

Mount Healthy coach Arvie Crouch said he will always remember Montgomery’s ability to lead and his work ethic.

“He’s an incredible young man that is very mature for his age,” Crouch said. “He’s the kind of player that sometimes only comes along one time in a coach’s career. I’m very proud of him and I’m glad his hard work is starting to pay off for him.”

Montgomery is considering offers from Illinois, Miami University, Buffalo and Army. Numerous other schools have also showed interest, according to Crouch.

The AP Divisions III and IV all-state teams were released Tuesday night. The teams are based on regular-season statistics.

Mount Healthy junior offensive lineman Justin Clark was also named to the Division III first team.

In Division IV, Fenwick senior offensive lineman Sean Sherman was named to the first team along with Indian Hill junior quarterback Reed Aichholz and Clinton-Massie senior running back Davey Tunon.

Fenwick’s Joe Snively was named the Division IV state coach of the year. He led the Falcons to the state semifinals against Columbus Bishop Hartley last week.

Fenwick senior linebacker Ben Hinton was also named to the first team on defense.
