Butler has secured a commitment from one of the area’s top girls basketball players.
Mt. Vernon’s Sydney Shelton, a 5-9 guard, posted on her Twitter account on Tuesday night: “So excited to announce that I will be playing basketball at Butler University.”
Shelton, Mt. Vernon’s all-time leading scorer, was previously committed to Kentucky. She was named as one of six core Indiana Junior All-Stars last season after averaging 22.5 points a game.
Shelton’s aunt, Julie Shelton, is a Butler assistant and is the former Mt. Vernon coach. Julie Shelton (the former Julie VonDielingen) scored more than 2,000 points in her playing career at Butler.
Butler was 14-16 last year in Kurt Godlevske’s first season as coach.
