MURFREESBORO — The MTCS boys and girls doubles teams reached the Region 5-A/AA tournament on Wednesday, sweeping the District 9-A/AA championships at Old Fort Park.
Will Reeves and Thomas Goodwyn teamed up to win the boys doubles championship, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Reeves, a freshman, and Goodwyn, a junior, reached the TSSAA Class A/AA semifinals a year ago.
“The boys probably played their best match in the finals,” MTCS coach Lawrence Goodwyn said. “We are steadily making progress. Thomas is a little taller this year. Will is a little stronger.”
The girls doubles team of Jenna Hixson and Cammie Adams won the championship, winning 6-2, 6-2 in the title match making the second straight season a MTCS girls doubles team won the district title.
“They have really gelled well together,” Lawrence Goodwyn said. “Jenna has really turned into a good doubles player.”
The region individual tournament is tentatively scheduled for May 11 at Old Fort Park.
Greenbrier’s Tristan Miranda defeated Cheatham County’s Nick Owens 6-2, 6-2 in the boys singles championship. Fayetteville’s Skylar McDonald defeated Sycamore’s Colby Hunter 6-1, 6-1 in the girls singles championship.
