Smoky Mountain’s softball team stayed in the thick of the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference championship race Thursday.

There was never any doubt.

The Mustangs turned a 4-0 lead after two innings into a 8-4 win over visiting Brevard.

Gracie Frady and Katie Fortner both went 3-for-4. Fortner had three RBIs. Claudia Crowe went 2-for-3 for Smoky Mountain (7-1, 4-1).

Micayla McCoy pitched a complete game with three earned runs, 10 hits and one walk. She had a half-dozen strikeouts.

Casey Gilbert and Callie Greene were both 3-4 for the Blue Devils (8-2, 3-2).

The Mustangs’ next game is Tuesday at home against Pisgah.
