Naples had an easy time picking up a victory Friday night at Immokalee High School. The Golden Eagles’ hardest work as it turned out was reaching into the record books and making history.
The Golden Eagles scored early and often en route to a 63-7 win over Immokalee for Naples’ third straight win.
The game set a record for a margin of victory in this storied rivalry, The previous record was Naples’ 50-0 win over the Indians in 1962. It was also Naples’ first win in Immokalee’s Gary Bates Stadium in eight years.
“We were fast and physical and were able to execute,” said Naples coach Bill Kramer. “We made great plays in small spaces as well. We were dominant up front, but we played Immokalee at a tough time for them. They’re struggling a little.”
Quarterback Kieran DiGiorno threw for 128 yards for the Golden Eagles (3-1).
Malcolm Joseph had 158 yards rushing and the only score for Immokalee (1-3).
“We just got our butts whipped,” Immokalee coach Dale More said. “We didn’t execute at all and struggled on both sides of the ball. But we’re going to put this behind us and focus on the district. Right now, we’re 0-0 in a way. The thing that matters most from here on in Cypress Lake (Immokalee’s opponent next week) and the district.”
Naples scored right away, with Fils-Aime’s 15-yard touchdown run after only 19 ticks had expired. The touchdown was set up by Tyler Byrd’s 84-yard return on the opening kickoff.
Naples would score again on another Fils-Aime run of 15. With two minutes left in the first, Fils-Aime took a swing pass and ran 71 yards for the Eagles’ third touchdown and a 21-0 Naples lead.
Early in the second quarter, Immokalee botched a punt snap and gave the Golden Eagles great field position at the Indian 17-yard line. And five plays later, DiGiorno scored on a 1-yard sneak made it 28-0 with 9:23 left in the second.
Only three minutes later, Naples would go ahead by 35 on Bobby Schuster’s 3-yard run. The drive was set up by Marcelino Charles, who blocked an Indian punt and also recovered deep into Immokalee territory.
Chris Riley returned a punt 69 yards and Byrd caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from DiGiorno to give Naples a 49-0 cushion by halftime.
